USSF Topanga 2004
It was a beautiful day in sunny Malibu. The Ampsurf crew started rolling in around 10 in the morning. John Taylor and I had stayed on the boat in Ventura the night before, and we met Paul Hollenbeck and Ron Warren at eh beach. Our close friend and Ampsurf supporter Tim Gomez showed up as well and took pictures of the crew. We had a few hours to kill before the prosthetics heat so instead of lazing about on the beach we all decided to take to the waves. We had a great time just playing around and we all got to ride some sweet waves. The swell was small, so the waves were only about 4-5 feet in height. We surfed for a few hours and our families that had made it out did some surfing as well. Ron wife Windy caught a gorgeous right and rode it for what seemed to last a lifetime. Derek my eldest son who has been learning how to surf made it out past the break for the first time and caught a couple of sweet rides. When it came time for us to hit the waves for the competition it was pretty blown out. We went out and John Taylor Competing on a long board for the first time was incredible he caught 3-4 great rides and sewed up the top spot in the heat. Ron Warren Rode well as always and put on a great performance for the folks on the beach, just barely falling short to John and finished out in Second place. I struggled and managed to ride a couple and took home a third place finish. It was a great day over all and the USSF put together another great competition. Ron came back for the Sunday heats. He did well and ended up taking third place in the grandmasters division.
