Ampsurf was able to be a part of this years first ever National Veterans Summer Sports Clinic. This event was a great success and looks to continue on for years to come. Ampsurf was asked in the spring to assemble a team of top notch surf instructors to teach up to 100 veterans for a week in the warm waters of San Diego California. We put together a group of twelve instructors including Surf legend Buttons Kaluhiokalani, former pro surfer Dave Champion, Lyn Burich from the WSA, Van Curaza & Justin Hodges from Pismo, John & Carolyn O' Connell from Shell Beach, Marilyn Schmidt from Arroyo Grande, James Sampson & Kurt Bormann from the LA VA, Brian Gonsales from Hawaii, and of course Ampsurf founders Rodney Roller and Dana Cummings.

We spent the week at the beautiful La Jolla Shores beach and Kellogg park teaching the best men and women this country has. We worked with veterans who suffered injuries ranging from blindness to Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), Paraplegia, Quadriplegia, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Burns, Stroke (CVA), and Amputation. The ages of the participants ranged from the early twenties to the late seventies. Everyone came out with a determination and motivation that few could rival. "One more time" and "One more wave" were the mottos of the week.
The VA did an amazing job putting this event together for the veterans. Each day the teams of vets went to different locations around San diego to participate in Sailing , Kayaking, Cycling, Track & Field, and of course our favorite Surfing!!! Opening Ceremonies were held at Sea World. Shamu and the crew put on a great show, and the closing ceremonies saw the local chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers lead us all to the end of a victorious week of fun in the sun.
We are looking forward to being apart of this event for many years to come. A huge Thank you to the Department of Veterans Affairs, the participants, the volunteers, all the sponsors, and everyone else that made this event a great success.
